Before he came to the United States in 1941, he was one of the editors of a short-lived anti-Nazi magazine in Moscow (1936--39). In this article, I examine how the seemingly Chinese aspects of Brecht's play from 1940, Der gute Mensch von Sezuan, intersect with Brecht's modernist aesthetic and theory of epic theatre. Additionally, I consider Chinese and Western elements of the text as interpreted in the Chinese opera adaptation of Der gute Mensch , entitled Sichuan Haoren The Good Person of Szechwan (German: Der gute Mensch von Sezuan, first translated less literally as The Good Man of Setzuan) is a play written by the German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, in collaboration with Margarete Steffin and Ruth Berlau. The play was begun in 1938 but not completed until 1941, while the author was in exile in the United States. The Good Woman of Setzuan, drama, a “parable in 10 scenes,” by Bertolt Brecht, produced in 1943 and published in 1953 as Der gute Mensch von Sezuan. The title has many English-language variants, including The Good Person of Szechwan and The Good Soul of Szechuan.
